Consider the quote by American psychologist Dan Goleman: "If you don't have self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you can't have empathy and have effective relationships, then no matter how smart you are, you are not going to get very far." When we consider the toxicity of leaders who have risen to top of political, corporate, and educational structures, reality tells us that sadly, Dr. Goleman's quote does not represent reality. The question isn't whether we can go far in life without emotional intelligence, the question is how much damage we are at risk of doing along the way. We will begin our series by reflecting on where we've been, where we are, and casting vision for who we would like to become as leaders. We will then explore the nature of emotional intelligence, how it is essential to effective and sustainable leadership, and how we can be leaders that leave a mark and not a scar.
