Miguel Salazar, Principal of Sundown Middle School
Finalist for NASSP National Middle Level Principal of the Year
The NASSP National Principal of the Year program annually recognizes outstanding middle level and high school principals who have succeeded in providing high quality learning opportunities for students. These principals are acknowledged by their peers for the exemplary contributions they have made to the profession. Each of the 50 states may select one middle level principal and one high school principal to represent their state. Then, the applications of these state winners are reviewed by past state principals of the year, industry leaders and experts, and NASSP staff. After these reviews, three finalists are named as contenders for both middle level and high school level National Principal of the Year awards. The NASSP Middle Level National Principal of the Year and High School National Principal of the Year are selected from among the finalists. TASSP is proud that Miguel Salazar of Sundown Middle School was selected as a finalist.
Before becoming principal of Sundown Middle School in Region 17, Salazar was a math teacher, coach, assistant principal and high school principal. He is dedicated to fostering positive school cultures, promoting equity and ensuring student success. His leadership philosophy is rooted in the belief that a thriving educational community is built upon shared accountability, high standards and continuous improvement. He champions proactive strategies to cultivate a positive school culture, focusing on building genuine relationships, addressing mental health needs and celebrating student achievements. He is committed to equipping students with the academic, social and emotional skills they need to succeed, and credits his staff for their willingness to carry out this vision.
One middle level and one high school winner will be announced as the 2025–26 NASSP National Principals of the Year at a gala celebration in Seattle at the UNITED Conference.
